Natural Colds & Cough Medicine

Natural Colds & Cough Medicine

We’ve all heard of the benefits of Manuka Honey so let me summarise the what, where, which, why and how…

What?

Manuka honey is honey in its most raw form. Along with hydrogen peroxide, manuka honey contains methylglyoxal (MGO) and dihydroxyacetone, two chemical substances with high antimicrobial action, and probably other bioactive compounds that give it additional potency. Manuka honey is actually graded according to its non-peroxide antibacterial potency, referred to as Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

Where?

There are so many in the market but the genuine Manuka Honey comes from New Zealand and usually has a UMF of 10+ or more on its label. You can buy Manuka honey at Wholefoods, Planet Organic, Holland & Barrett, Amazon, Some supermarkets, and most health shops.

Which?

Being an active honey with exclusive properties and an attached premium to pay for it, anything below UMF 10+ will be just as good as your standard bees honey on the supermarket shelf. UMF 10+ is the recommended factor for children and higher potencies such as up to UMF 20+ are ideal for adults.

Why?

There was a recent report in the news relating Manuka Honey’s antibacterial power being ideal for cleansing hospital equipment. Such is the potency of this beautiful compound. 10 great reasons to administer Manuka Honey are:

1-Boosts the Immune system

2-Helps with bowel issues

3-Prevents & helps cure Coughs & Colds

4-Helps with sinusitis

5-Improves dental health

6-Excellent face mask (magic for puberty related face eruptions)

7-Helps with rosacea (even in babies)

8-Heals cuts & burns faster

9-Reduces hair loss (best mixed with your conditioner)

10-Best form of energy booster

How?

Incorporate it into your breakfast routine. I have been giving my children (since the age of 1) a small teaspoon of Manuka UMF 10+ with a pinch of turmeric and black pepper, every morning first thing before they dive into their breakfast. They call it their magic chocolate and love the sweetness. I’m religious about it in the winter and use it every now and then in the summer when the need is less. If they have a sore throat or a cough, I will add some drops of lemon and ginger.

Turmeric and black pepper are an ancient Ayurvedic mixture. Turmeric is well known for its antibacterial properties but like every chemical component, its potency and absorbance is enhanced when ingested with black pepper. It’s a bit like Iron is best absorbed together with Vitamin C.

My eldest daughter suffered from bowel issues due to hypermobility, a condition existent in 30% of children but rarely diagnosed. I must say my Manuka magic chocolate may or may not have helped but I clearly see the difference it has made for her.

Let me know if you use Manuka Honey or how it goes if you choose to start.

It seems to work like magic ! I wasn’t aware of the many other health benefits listed above. Maybe I should use it all the time porridge, pancakes etc…….
